2017 Allens Women's Moot

The 2017 Allens Women's Moot is an amalgamation of the Competitions and Women's portfolios. This competition was created in 2015 with the aspiration of helping to break down differences in opportunity between women and men at university. It is well known that the legal profession (and more specifically advocacy) structurally disadvantages women and it was the intention of this competition to given female advocates further experience beyond ordinary mooting competitions, and to celebrate women in the law.

We are pleased to announce in 2017 the Women's Moot will run again in second semester. We hope to see the competition expand to see more women mooting.

The 2016 Women's Moot was a huge success. We had 11 teams in the competition, and the moot concerned a contracts problem written by Associate Professor Jeannie Paterson. The Grand Final was presided over by Lisa Sarmas, barrister and academic at Melbourne Law School, and Katrina Howard SC, a leading Intellectual Property barrister. Katrina Howard spoke to the attendees about her experience as a woman in the law, and we enjoyed drinks and nibbles provided by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

The winning team was Panagotia Houpis, Emily Mackay and Georgie Tweedy. Georgie Tweedy received the prize for Best Oralist in the Grand Final. The runner up team was Lydia Holt, Mai Mitsumori-Miller and Adaena Sinclair-Blakemore. Congratulations to all competitors!
